I never thought I’d sit down and write about this but bare with me and it will change the way you light a candle forever.
A couple months ago as I was purchasing a candle at Jo Malone, the salesman asked if I need instructions on how to “care” for the candle, and I asked him what sort of instructions, don't you just ‘ light a candle?’. Apparently I’ve been doing it wrong forever.
These tips will help your candle last longer and scent your space in the best way.
Always trim the wick before you light it. If it’s too long, the flame will be too big and you’ll have a smoky candle; which will burn it faster and stain the jar with soot. I bought my wick trimmer from Dyptique, another brand I love for candles.
When you actually light the candle, run the flame all over the surface of the candle. This will make sure the candle burns at the same level and you don't get a major dip OR “tunnel” in the middle (like I did with my Nest candle above). That is why using matches is way better than a lighter.
Following these steps will make your candle last longer and it will burn smoothly leaving behind a beautifully scented room.
If you’re a candle lover like I am, here are some of my favourite candles: Dyptique, NEST, Jo Malone and Roja.
